The Outer Banks and the Opioid & Addiction Crisis
The Outer Banks are barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, separating the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland. Their open-sea beaches, state parks, and shipwreck diving sites make them a popular vacation destination. Nags Head is one of over a dozen small towns that make up the area called The Outer Banks, often referred by the letters “OBX”. This area is a magnet for big game fishing and has great surfing up and down the coast. The Outer Banks has a community that blooms during the summer season with up to 300,000 tourists each week.
So, one might ask, “Why does Dare County have one of the highest drug overdose rates in North Carolina?”. With such a small population of less than 55,000 people, why would this quant community be dealing with such an epidemic of heroin and prescription drug abuse?
As a member of The Dare Coalition Against Substance Abuse, Right Path Treatment Centers is actively in collaboration with its members trying to get to bottom of this issue and find answers to how we can curb this trend. Finding treatment for those in need is the main focus and Dare County is making great advances such as expanding access to Narcan/Naloxone and creating needle exchanges. The coalition meets once a month and is open to anyone that would like more information and especially those that would like to join us in this fight.
If you are dealing with addiction issues or know someone that needs help please do not wait another single day.
